YOGA
Serenity in Motion – Finding Balance Through Yoga
Sharing a yoga practice is about more than just physical movement; it’s about providing the youth at Echo Glen with the tools to navigate their inner world. Many residents have never had the opportunity to slow down, breathe, and connect with their bodies in a safe environment. These sessions offer a pathway to healing, resilience, and a quiet mind.
You don’t need to be a world-renowned yogi—just a compassionate, trauma-informed practitioner who wants to show these young people that they are worth the time and the effort.
Two Meaningful Ways to Lead
Cottage Yoga Sessions
-
Commitment: Weekly or every other week — flexible afternoon or evening slots.
-
Group Size: 1–2 volunteers per cottage (10–17 youth per group).
-
What you’ll do:
-
Lead a trauma-informed practice focusing on breathwork, grounding, and gentle movement.
-
Teach simple tools for emotional regulation and stress release that youth can use in their daily lives.
-
Foster an environment of non-judgment, safety, and self-respect.
-
-
We provide: Yoga mats, a designated space, and staff support during every session.
Why Trauma-Informed Yoga?
Most of the youth we serve have experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Traditional yoga cues can sometimes be triggering, which is why we emphasize a trauma-informed approach:
-
Invitational Language: Using “if you like” or “when you’re ready” to return agency to the youth.
-
Safety First: Creating a predictable, supportive environment.
-
Empowerment: Helping residents realize they have control over their own bodies and reactions.
Volunteer Requirements & Next Steps
-
Orientation: A background check and a brief orientation are required to ensure the safety of our volunteers and residents.
-
No Corrections Experience? No problem. We provide the necessary training to help you feel comfortable in the environment.
-
Shadowing: Once cleared, you’re welcome to observe a current volunteer session to get a feel for the rhythm of the cottage.
“Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.” > Your presence tells these teens: You matter. You are worth my time. You are more than your mistakes.
